INITIAL USE

Press the ON/OFF 7 button.

This will switch on the taximeter in the "For Hire" mode, making your taxi available for use. This is indicated by the centre of the display indicating FOR HIRE * and FOR HIRE being illuminated in red at the top of the meter’s front panel. Your taxi's exterior and/or interior FOR HIRE sign will also be switched on.

You can now:-

  • Press and release the RESTORE * restore button to brighten or dim the display in the taximeter. The brightness level will cycle to fully dim before stepping to full brightness and so on.
  • If required, press the RATE *rate button to change to the desired tariff. The current tariff is indicated in the left hand side of the display *, above the RATE heading.
  • Press the EXTRAS e button whilst in the “For Hire” mode to show the time. The time is displayed in digital format (24 hour system) in hours, minutes and seconds. Using the taximeter's internal battery, the clock keeps time even when disconnected from the vehicle battery. In the unlikely event of the clock gaining or losing time (its accuracy is better than 60 seconds per month) you can rectify a gain or loss of 30 seconds, ONCE A WEEK only, by pressing the MODE 3button whilst the clock is displayed. The MODE button 3 should be pressed when the time is between 1 and 29 if the clock is fast or between 31 and 59 if the clock is slow.
  • A second press of the EXTRAS e button will display the date (day, month and year).

Pressing the RESTORE * restore button whilst the clock or date is displayed will return you to the “For Hire” mode.

ENGAGING A FARE

Press the MODE 3 button.

The FOR HIRE message will be removed from the display and be replaced by: -

  • The current tariff number, above the RATE * heading at the left hand side of the display and

  • the minimum initial fare, above the FARE heading, and the initial EXTRAS, as set by your Local Authority.

FOR HIRE at the top of the front panel will be extinguished and HIRED will be illuminated.

Your "For Hire" roof light (if fitted) will be extinguished, the “Hired” light in your lampbox (if fitted) is illuminated and your taxi is now "hired". You can add in any extras, as detailed in the current procedures from your Local Authority, by repeatedly pressing the EXTRASe button to increase the displayed total above the EXTRAS heading.

TERMINATING A FARE

Press the MODE 3 button.

The red HIRED at the top of the control panel will be switched off and STOPPED will be illuminated. STOPPED indicates that the "charge by time" has been stopped. However the "charge by distance" is still in force and will affect the fare amount if the vehicle is driven.

Pressing the RESTORE * restore button at this time will revert the meter to the “Hired” mode, i.e. STOPPED at the top of the front panel will be extinguished and HIRED will be illuminated. You can then continue with the current hire.

ADDING FARES TO EXTRAS

Press the MODE 3 button when your taxicab is stopped.

The fare and extras will be totalled and the result shown in the meter display headed by tOtAL.

Pressing the RESTORE * restore button at this time will change the meter to the “Stopped” mode. You can then continue with the current hire.

If your vehicle starts to move, the previously totalled fare and extras will change back to their separated states and STOPPED will be illuminated at the top of the front panel.

Once the fare has been paid, pressing the MODE 3 button will add the fare to the meter's memory totals and change the meter to the “For Hire” mode, i.e. the screen will display FOR HIRE once again and your "For Hire" roof lamp will light.

SWITCHING THE METER OFF

Press the ON/OFF 7 button whilst in the “For Hire” mode, when the time or date is displayed or the totals are being read.

YOU CANNOT SWITCH THE METER OFF WHILST HIRED OR STOPPED ARE ILLUMINATED AT THE TOP OF THE DISPLAY!

TOTALS

Standard Totals

Once the meter has been switched on as described in Paragraph 2.2, various operational totals can be displayed.

If you press the EXTRAS e button whilst in the “For Hire” mode, the current time is displayed.

A second press of the EXTRAS e button will display the date.

Further presses of the EXTRAS e button will display the various standard totals. They are, in sequence: -

  • dISt - the current total of miles (or kilometres).

  • PAId - the current total paid distance.

  • F - the total amount of fares.

  • E - the total amount of extras.

  • FE - the total of fares and extras combined (the F is flashing).

  • trIP - the total number of hires.

  • dISC - the number of times that the taximeter has been disconnected from the vehicle's battery.

  • P_rC - the number of times the power fail recovery * has been used.

These last two totals can only be zeroed by your dealer. The other totals can be zeroed by pressing the MODE 3 button whilst the total is displayed

Pressing the EXTRAS e button once more after P_rC has been displayed will return you to the “For Hire” mode.

Special Totals

A series of totals, eight in number, are stored in the taximeter memory and can be used to produce usage reports. These totals are of value to fleet operators and multi-cab owners. The totals can only be accessed by a special code.

These totals provide the following information for the first four tariffs and, when selected, the relevant total is displayed in the meter preceded by the tariff number (flashing) and the code for that total. The sequence for the first set of tariffs is completed BEFORE the second, third and fourth set.

The totals are:

• the total number of jobs in that tariff.

displayed as t1J, t2J, t3J and t4J, e.g. t2J 6 would indicate that the taxi had completed a total of six jobs with tariff 2 selected.

• the total number of units in that tariff.

displayed as t1U, t2U, t3U and t4U, e.g. t3U 26 would indicate that the taxi had completed 26 units with tariff 3 selected.

• the total number of extras units in that tariff.

displayed as t1E, t2E, t3E and t4E, e.g. t4E 16 would indicate that the driver had booked 16 units of extras with tariff 4 selected.

• the total distance travelled in that tariff.

displayed as t1d, t2d, t3d and t4d, e.g. t1d 13.6 would indicate that the taxi had driven a total distance of 13.6 units (miles or kilometres as selected in the setting up procedure) with tariff 1 selected.

• the total paid distance in that tariff.

displayed as t1P, t2P, t3P and t4P, e.g. t3P 10.6 would indicate that the taxi has driven 10.6 paid units (miles or kilometres as selected in the setting up procedure) with tariff 3 selected.

• the total time spent in each tariff.

designated as t1t, t2t, t3t and t4t, e.g. t2t 12.40 would indicate that the taxi had been used for a total time of 12.40 hours (to 100th of an hour) with tariff 2 selected.

• the total time spent hired or stopped in each tariff.

designated as t1L, t2L, t3L and t4L, e.g. t2L 13.65 would indicate that the taxi had been hired for a total of 13.65 hours (to 100th of an hour) with tariff 2 selected.

The eighth total is currently reserved for future use and at the moment is displayed as t1r, etc.

To gain access to the totals function, you must first set the current access code (PIN) as follows:

  • With the meter switched off, hold down the MODE 3 button and then press the ON/OFF 7 button. The meter will power up and display the issue number of the current WAYFARER software.
  • Press the EXTRAS

e button repeatedly (16 times to cycle through the various options of the setting up procedure - see Section 3) till PIN 0000 is displayed on the meter. The right hand 0 will be flashing.
  • Press the RESTORE restore button the required number of times to change the flashing 0 to the last digit of your PIN. If you pass the number you will have to continue pressing the button until the correct number is displayed again.
  • When the last number of the PIN is displayed, press the RATE rate button to move to the third 0 and set the third PIN digit as above
  • Repeat the above procedure until all four digits of the PIN are displayed and then press the MODE 3 button. The meter will return to the “For Hire” mode and the standard and special totals can be accessed by pressing the EXTRAS e button to cycle through them.

When the correct PIN has been keyed in, you will be able to access the special totals after the standard ones. As a further security feature, there is no visible indication that the correct PIN has been entered until the first of the special totals is displayed after the standard totals. If the first special total (t1J) is NOT displayed after the P_rC option, then the incorrect PIN has been entered and you will have to re-enter the correct number.
